Who we are

Ing. Enea Mattei S.p.A. has more than a century of experience in manufacturing rotary vane air compressors for commercial, industrial, OEM and transit applications.

In 1919, after World War I, Enea Mattei, a young officer in the Army Engineering Corps, created a company that specialized in the design, manufacturing and maintenance of air compressors—which was previously unheard of in Italy’s industrial sector.

Four years later, Mattei invested in a foundry in Monza to produce cast iron and build a new facility in Milan. World War II halted production and did not begin again until post-war. In 1958, the company produced its first rotary vane air compressor.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATTEI

In 1960, Ing. Enea Mattei S.p.A. began the construction of a new factory in Vimodrone. Six years later, the factory opened and it has since served as the company’s headquarters.

In 1963, Giulio Contaldi, of OMIC (Officine Meccaniche Ing. Contaldi), acquired and became the Managing Director of Ing. Enea Mattei S.p.A. With the partnership of Officine Meccaniche Ing. Contaldi, a well-known brand within the electric generators industry, Mattei was able to expand production and enter a new market sector.

Throughout the years, Ing. Enea Mattei S.p.A. has reached countless milestones, including international expansion. Between 1985 and 1988, Mattei launched the following subsidiaries: Mattei Compressors Inc. in the United States, Mattei Compresseurs Sarl in France, and Mattei Compressors Ltd. in the United Kingdom. In 2000, Mattei Kompressoren Deutschland GmbH was created and shortly thereafter, Mattei’s presence expanded to Russia and Spain. In 2007, the company entered the Chinese market with the launch of Mattei (SuZhou) Air Compressors Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
